(Acyclovir is also known by brand names like Zovirax, Acivir, and Herpex in India and abroad.)
Acyclovir 400 mg is an antiviral medicine used to treat infections caused by certain types of viruses, primarily the Herpes viruses. It does not cure the infection but helps reduce symptoms, shorten duration, and prevent outbreaks when taken early or as suppression.
Key Uses:Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV):
Genital herpes (HSV-2)
Cold sores (HSV-1)
Herpes labialis
Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV):
Chickenpox
Herpes zoster (shingles)
Prevention:
Used as prophylaxis in immunocompromised patients (e.g., HIV, cancer therapy, organ transplant)
Acyclovir is a nucleoside analog. It gets incorporated into viral DNA and inhibits viral DNA polymerase, thereby preventing the replication of the virus.
Dosage (Typical Adult):Genital Herpes (Initial Episode): 400 mg 3 times a day for 7–10 days
Genital Herpes (Recurrent): 400 mg 3 times a day for 5 days or 800 mg twice daily
Suppressive Therapy: 400 mg twice a day for up to 12 months
Herpes Zoster (Shingles): 800 mg 5 times a day

(Always follow the prescribed dose and duration by your doctor.)

Molnupiravir 200 mg Capsule
Category: Antiviral medication
Class: Ribonucleoside analog
Approved / Primary UseTreatment of Mild to Moderate COVID-19
Given to adults (≥18 years) with confirmed COVID-19 infection.
Intended for patients at high risk of progression to severe disease, hospitalization, or death (e.g., elderly, diabetics, obese, cardiac patients, immunocompromised).
Works best when started within 5 days of symptom onset.
Molnupiravir is a prodrug → converted in the body to an active form that incorporates into viral RNA.
Causes errors in the viral genetic code (error catastrophe).
This stops SARS-CoV-2 virus replication inside the body.
200 mg capsules are standard.
Recommended adult dose: 800 mg (four 200 mg capsules) twice daily for 5 days.
Full course = 40 capsules (no more, no less).
Clinical trials showed a reduction in risk of hospitalization and death in high-risk COVID-19 patients (though not as strong as newer antivirals like Paxlovid [nirmatrelvir + ritonavir]).
Still considered a treatment option where Paxlovid or monoclonal antibodies are not available.
Common:
Headache
Diarrhea, nausea
Dizziness
Rare but important:
Potential risk of mutagenicity (genetic mutations), so long-term safety still monitored.
Avoid in pregnancy (may harm the unborn baby).
Not for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Should not be used in patients <18 years (may affect bone and cartilage growth).
Use only under doctor’s prescription – not for prevention, only for treatment of COVID-19.
