Category: Broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic
Form: Available as eye drops and ear drops

1. Bacterial Conjunctivitis – redness, discharge, irritation caused by bacteria

2. Keratitis / Corneal Ulcers – bacterial infection of the cornea

3. Blepharitis – eyelid infection

4. Post-operative prophylaxis – to prevent infection after eye surgeries like cataract removal, LASIK

5. Trachoma (in some cases, as part of combination therapy)

1. Otitis Externa (outer ear infection, “swimmer’s ear”)

2. Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) – long-standing middle ear infection with pus discharge

3. Post ear surgery prophylaxis – to prevent bacterial infection after procedures like tympanoplasty

• Ofloxacin inhibits DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV in bacteria.

• This blocks bacterial DNA replication and repair → kills bacteria.

• Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae.

• Viral eye/ear infections (like herpes, adenovirus conjunctivitis)

• Fungal infections

• Burning, stinging, or irritation at application site

• Redness, itching, or discomfort in eye/ear

• Rare: allergic reaction, superinfection with resistant organisms/fungi (if used for long)

• For external use only (not for injection or oral use).

• Avoid touching the dropper tip to prevent contamination.

• Remove contact lenses before using in the eye (may reinsert after 15–20 mins).

• Use under medical supervision, especially in children, pregnant, or breastfeeding women.
