Ganciclovir is an antiviral medication that belongs to the class of nucleoside analogues. It works by stopping the growth and multiplication of certain viruses, especially cytomegalovirus (CMV).

Main Uses:

1. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Infections:

   • Used to treat CMV infections in immunocompromised patients, such as those with HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients, or cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

   • Commonly used for CMV retinitis (a serious eye infection that can lead to blindness).

2. CMV Prevention (Prophylaxis):

   • Given to prevent CMV infection in patients undergoing organ or bone marrow transplantation.

3. Other Herpesvirus Infections (off-label):

   • Sometimes used against other herpesvirus-related infections when standard antiviral drugs are ineffective.
