Humalog 200 IU/mL KwikPen (Insulin Lispro)
Category:
Antidiabetic agent
Rapid-acting Insulin analogue
Formulation:
Prefilled KwikPen injection device
Each mL contains 200 IU of Insulin Lispro (double the concentration of standard 100 IU/mL insulin).
Strength: Usually available in 3 mL pens (600 IU total per pen).
Insulin Lispro is a rapid-acting human insulin analogue created by reversing two amino acids (proline at position B28 and lysine at B29) of regular insulin.
This modification prevents insulin molecules from forming hexamers, so they are absorbed faster from subcutaneous tissue.
Onset: 10–15 minutes
Peak action: 30–90 minutes
Duration: 3–5 hours
⚡ Much faster than regular human insulin (which takes 30–60 minutes to start).
Uses / IndicationsType 1 Diabetes Mellitus → to provide meal-time (prandial) glucose control.
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus → when oral antidiabetics are insufficient, often combined with basal insulin.
Used in intensive insulin therapy regimens (basal + bolus).
Sometimes used in insulin pumps (CSII).
Given subcutaneously (abdomen, thigh, upper arm, buttock).
Taken within 15 minutes before or immediately after meals.
Dose is individualized based on blood sugar, carbohydrate intake, physical activity, and doctor’s advice.
Important:
Since this is 200 IU/mL (concentrated), the KwikPen is designed to deliver the correct unit dose without manual conversion.
Example: If you dial 10 units on the KwikPen, you get 10 units of insulin lispro, not 20 — the pen adjusts automatically.
Smaller injection volume (half the volume vs 100 IU/mL).
Useful for patients requiring higher daily doses of insulin.
More comfortable and convenient (fewer injections, less fluid).
Common:
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar: sweating, tremor, dizziness, confusion, palpitations).
Injection site reactions: redness, itching, swelling.
Weight gain (long-term).
Less Common / Serious:
Severe hypoglycemia → seizures, loss of consciousness.
Lipodystrophy (fat loss or thickening at injection site if same spot is reused).
Allergic reaction (rare).
Hypokalemia (low potassium if overdosed).
Rotate injection sites to prevent lipodystrophy.
Monitor blood sugar frequently.
Do not share pens (risk of infection).
Adjust dose in illness, stress, exercise, or diet change.
Caution with drugs like beta-blockers, steroids, thiazides — they may alter insulin effect.
Safe in pregnancy (used commonly), but requires careful dose adjustment.
