Ivermectin is an antiparasitic medicine derived from avermectins (compounds from Streptomyces avermitilis).
It is used worldwide to treat parasitic infections in humans and animals.
Available in tablet, cream, and injectable forms.
Ivermectin 3 mg tablets – the commonly prescribed oral form for humans.
Other strengths (6 mg, 12 mg) are also available, but 3 mg is the base unit dose.
Ivermectin binds to glutamate-gated chloride channels in parasite nerve and muscle cells.
This increases chloride influx → paralysis and death of parasite.
Selective toxicity: It acts on parasites but is safe for humans at therapeutic doses because human nerve cells lack these channels.
Ivermectin 3 mg tablets are prescribed for:
Intestinal strongyloidiasis (Strongyloides stercoralis)
Onchocerciasis (river blindness) – caused by Onchocerca volvulus
Lymphatic filariasis (with albendazole/diethylcarbamazine in endemic areas)
Scabies (especially resistant or crusted type)
Head lice (pediculosis capitis)
Cutaneous larva migrans (skin parasite infections)
Off-label: sometimes used in rosacea, demodicosis (mite infestation of skin)
Dose depends on body weight and type of infection.
Usual dose: 150–200 mcg/kg body weight, given once.
For a 60 kg adult → ~12 mg (i.e., 4 tablets of 3 mg each).
Some infections require repeated doses after 1–2 weeks.
Always taken on an empty stomach with water.
Most are mild and temporary:
Headache, dizziness
Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort
Tiredness, muscle pain
In onchocerciasis: itching, rash, lymph node swelling (called Mazzotti reaction), due to dying parasites.
Rare but serious:
Low blood pressure
Severe allergic reaction (swelling, difficulty breathing)
Neurological effects (rare in high doses or certain genetic conditions)
Not usually given to:
Children <15 kg or <5 years old
Pregnant women (safety not well established)
Severe liver disease patients (needs caution)
Patients with Loa loa (African eye worm) infection can develop severe brain complications → must be excluded in endemic regions.
May interact with:
Warfarin (changes INR)
Other medicines metabolized by liver (CYP3A4 pathway)
Should not be combined with alcohol (increases side effects like dizziness, nausea).
Very effective single-dose therapy against many parasites.
WHO lists it as an Essential Medicine for public health programs (especially mass treatment in river blindness and lymphatic filariasis).

Ivermectin is an antiparasitic medication derived from avermectins (produced by Streptomyces avermitilis).
It belongs to the class of drugs called anthelmintics (anti-worm drugs).
Strength: 12 mg tablets are among the higher oral doses available.
Ivermectin binds selectively to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels in parasites.
This increases permeability of cell membranes to chloride ions → causes paralysis and death of the parasite.
It does not usually affect human cells because these channels are absent in humans.
Ivermectin 12 mg tablets are prescribed for:
Parasitic worm infections
Strongyloidiasis (intestinal threadworm)
Onchocerciasis (river blindness)
Ascariasis (roundworm)
Trichuriasis (whipworm)
Filariasis (lymphatic filariasis, often in combination therapy)
Ectoparasite infestations
Scabies (mites)
Head lice
Other off-label/experimental uses
Rosacea (skin condition)
Investigated for certain viral infections (e.g., COVID-19, but not recommended in guidelines due to insufficient evidence).
Typical dose: 150–200 mcg/kg body weight as a single dose.
For an adult (≈60–70 kg), that equals 12 mg once.
Sometimes repeated after 1–2 weeks depending on infection type.
Should be taken on an empty stomach with water.
Common side effects:
Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain
Dizziness, headache
Fatigue
Reaction to parasite death (esp. in filariasis/onchocerciasis):
Fever, itching, skin rash, joint pains
Swelling of lymph nodes
Rare but serious side effects:
Very low blood pressure
Severe allergic reactions
Neurological effects (confusion, seizures) – rare, usually in patients with very high parasite burden
Not recommended in children under 15 kg or under 5 years.
Use with caution in elderly and in patients with liver disease.
Should not be combined with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (can raise drug levels).
Avoid alcohol during treatment.
Prescription medicine in most countries.
On the WHO List of Essential Medicines for parasitic infections.

| Brand | IVERFIT 24 MG TAB |

| Packaging Type | Strip |
| Composition | IVERMECTIN 24 MG TAB |
| Dose/Strength | 24 mg |
Drug Name: Ivermectin
Strength: 24 mg per tablet (higher-strength formulation, often used in adults with higher body weight or for convenience dosing)
Drug Class: Antiparasitic agent (anthelmintic)
Type: Macrocyclic lactone derivative (avermectin family)
Ivermectin binds selectively and with high affinity to glutamate-gated chloride channels in the nerve and muscle cells of parasites.
This increases the permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions, leading to paralysis and death of the parasite.
It has activity against a wide range of nematodes (roundworms) and ectoparasites (lice, mites, scabies).
It does not usually cross the human blood–brain barrier at normal doses, which helps limit toxicity.
Ivermectin 24 mg tablet is mainly prescribed for:
Intestinal strongyloidiasis (threadworm infection)
Onchocerciasis (river blindness caused by Onchocerca volvulus)
Lymphatic filariasis (in some treatment regimens, often combined with albendazole/DEC)
Scabies (especially crusted/scabies resistant to topical treatment)
Pediculosis (head lice, body lice)
Other parasitic infections: Ascariasis, trichuriasis, cutaneous larva migrans, gnathostomiasis
Off-label uses: In some cases, ivermectin has been studied for rosacea, demodex infestations, and viral infections (though evidence varies).
Usual dose is 150–200 mcg/kg body weight as a single oral dose (may be repeated after 1–2 weeks depending on infection).
24 mg tablet is typically used for adults with body weight ~70–80 kg or higher, or when high-dose convenience dosing is required.
Often taken on an empty stomach with water for better absorption.
Absorption: Oral bioavailability ~60%; enhanced with fatty meals.
Peak plasma: 4–5 hours.
Distribution: Lipophilic, widely distributed in tissues.
Metabolism: Mainly hepatic (CYP3A4).
Elimination half-life: ~18 hours, metabolites may last longer.
Excretion: Mainly via feces.
Generally well tolerated, but may include:
Headache, dizziness
Nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea
Itching, rash
Fever, muscle/joint pain (especially in treatment of onchocerciasis due to parasite die-off reaction, called Mazzotti reaction)
Rare: hypotension, tachycardia, seizures (high doses or CNS penetration)
Neurological disorders: Should be used cautiously in patients with meningitis or conditions compromising the blood–brain barrier.
Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Safety not fully established → generally avoided unless necessary.
Children: Usually avoided in children <15 kg body weight.
Drug interactions:
Other CYP3A4 substrates/inhibitors may affect blood levels.
Should not be combined with strong CNS depressants.
