| Brand | ALZOCIN 10 MG |
| Product Type | API |
| Composition | ALFUZOCIN PR 10 MG TAB |
| Form | Tablet |
| Country of Origin | Made in India |
Alfuzosin is a medicine from the class alpha-1 adrenergic receptor blockers.
PR = Prolonged Release → designed to release the drug slowly over time, so it is usually taken once daily.
Strength: 10 mg tablet (most common dose).
Mainly used in urology for urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate.
Blocks alpha-1 adrenergic receptors in the smooth muscle of the prostate, bladder neck, and urethra.
Causes relaxation of these muscles, leading to:
Easier urine flow.
Reduced urinary hesitancy and incomplete emptying.
Does not shrink the prostate, but improves symptoms.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) → relief of lower urinary tract symptoms such as:
Difficulty starting urination.
Weak urine stream.
Frequent urination (especially at night).
Urgency and incomplete bladder emptying.
Sometimes used off-label for:
Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome.
Kidney stone passage (to relax ureter muscles, though tamsulosin is more common).
Typical adult dose: 10 mg tablet once daily after a meal (to reduce side effects like low blood pressure).
Swallow whole; do not crush/chew (important for prolonged release).
Takes a few days to weeks to see full symptom relief.
Onset: Some relief within hours, but full effect after several days.
Duration: 24 hours (hence once-daily dosing with PR form).
Common:
Dizziness, headache.
Fatigue.
Nasal congestion.
Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, abdominal pain).
Less common but important:
Orthostatic hypotension (drop in blood pressure on standing → dizziness, fainting).
Retrograde ejaculation (semen enters bladder instead of exiting).
Palpitations or fast heart rate.
Rare:
Allergic reactions (rash, swelling).
Liver enzyme elevation.
History of orthostatic hypotension.
Severe liver impairment.
Use caution with other antihypertensives (additive low BP effect).
Inform ophthalmologist before cataract surgery (risk of Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome with alpha-blockers).
Not for use in women or children (intended for adult men).
Other blood pressure–lowering drugs (additive effect).
Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (like ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir) → can increase alfuzosin levels.
Should not be combined with other alpha-blockers.
